Maybe the very first movie I saw in color. Maybe the first. For some
reason, I remembered scenes from *Three Godfathers* even though I saw it
when it was just released, and not since. I remember John Wayne at the
bar turning around, seeing the sheriff, saying, "You got me," then
keeling over. I remember before that the ghosts of Godfathers past while
he's carrying the baby across the desert.

On my list I forgot GUNMAN'S WALK, directed by Phil Karlson and
featuring Tab Hunter's best performance, if that's your idea of a good
thing.

Never seen them.

The following are movies I might have included, but for various
reasons didn't:

BAD COMPANY (1972) Not included, mainly b/c I forgot about it
ULZANA'S RAID (1972)
THE CHEYENNE SOCIAL CLUB (1970)
MONTE WALSH (1970)
VALDEZ IS COMING (1971)
THE BALLAD OF CABLE HOGUE (1970)
A BIG HAND FOR THE LITTLE LADY (1966) Mainly because I hate the ending
NIGHT PASSAGE (1957)
COLORADO TERRITORY (1949) I came very close to including this one
VIRGINIA CITY (1940)
DARK COMMAND (1940)
WESTERN UNION (1941)
THE SPOILERS (1942)

I had an unstated rule of "no moderns":
JUNIOR BONNER (1972)
HUD (1963) One of my top faves ever, but I had to leave it off this
particular list
THE MISFITS (1961)

No Mexicans need apply:
VIVA ZAPATA! (1952)
BANDIDO (1956)
[Where's VIVA VILLA?]
Post 1909 Mexicans, that is.

And my unbreakable law of laws, no modern Mexicans:

TREASURE OF THE SIERRA MADRE (1948)

That's a pretty good list, most of the ones I've seen there I've
liked. I guess over the years Westerns have been my favorite genre
over the years. It certainly was when I was a kid - The first Western
I remember seeing was _ Riders of the Purple Sage_ (1941 version) -
The scene that sticks in my mind for some reason is one of an
unconscious masked rider being unmasked and the discovery that it was
a girl.

For a long time the title of _Night Passage_ puzzled me as he seemed
to have no relationship to the plot, fairly recently I found what it
meant and it was quite valid.

For some reason _ Lonesome Dove _ didn't grab me - I'm not too crazy
about Larry McMurtry in general.

They hung Jake, their old pard, mostly for rustling. They began the move
north after securing an investment from over the border. By rustling.

It abused coincidence considerably. You'd see someone at St Joe and then
they'd bump into them again up in Montana, and here come John Chishulm
and Wes Hardin meeting out in the open, and Famous Shoes was everywhere,
even though he was always on foot.

You think maybe McMurtry overdid the legectomy bit? How many times does
that happen out on the lone prairie? They whittled Gus down by one and
would've taken the other had he allowed it, and then in the sequel, here
comes the Captain and another leg off. What's that mean?

I've seen only a small percentage of the above.
Re:
"Riders of the Purple Sage". My father would have loved it.
He loved the Zane Gray books.

I remember a movie about an Indian who kidnaps a
woman and the movie seemed to be about a "cowboy"
who chases him. At one point the Indian tends to his horse,
giving it water, then when finished, turns to the woman, and
gives her water in the same way, outlining his priorities,
and her position in his world.
I loved this film.

Anyone remember the name of this film?
Whatever, it rates high in any list I could offer.

"Two Mules for Sister Sarah". The only Easwood Western
which has aged well for me.

"Guns For San Sebastian"
"Viva Villa"

I find it interesting that "Chisum" isn't mentioned much.
The character Wayne played was not an easy one to
like, but I thought it typical of a number of characters found
in Westerns, and the "Chisum Trail" seems to be part of the
mythology of the West. Wayne made a number of films in
which I detected the same character traits.

Stone me.

It's Chisholm Trail, and it's a different guy.
