I've always wondered which Harold Lloyd films were missing. Now I know.
Annette Lloyd lists the 18 missing Harold Lloyd glass character films
on her website, haroldlloyd.us.
Here they are:
Step Lively
The Lamb
Hit Him Again
Follow the Crowd
Sic 'Em Towser
That's Him
Bride and Gloom
Two Scrambled
Kicking the Germ Out of Germany
Bees in His Bonnet
Going! Going! Gone!
Wanted $5000
Si Senor
The Rajah
He Leads, Others Follow
Soft Money
Count the Votes
His Only Father
That's sad. Between Chaplin and Keaton there's only one missing: Her
Friend the Bandit (and I'm not ever sure it really is a Chaplin film).
You'd think that considering Harold Lloyd's popularity in the twenties
that the list would be shorter. But what's even worse, is that there
are only 14 Lonesome Luke films known to exist. >> Stay informed about: 18 Harold Lloyd Glass Character Films Missing |

Richard M Roberts wrote on Aug 17 2002:
"A DESERT HERO does indeed survive. David Pearson can pop
in and correct me on this if I'm wrong, but I believe Keaton does make
a brief appearance in it as it was the film they were making when he
returned from the military."
So I asked on Oct 1, 2005:
"It's been more than two years since this statement was made.
Has anyone got anymore information on A DESERT HERO and Keaton's
supposed guest appearance?"
And you, David answered:
"I was told Buster is in it -- by RMR! Damned if I know if Bus is in it
or not. Of course, I'd love to see it regardless. (Hint, Hint.)"
You went on to say:
"Over three years, and I'm just reading about it now.
Not a clue.

Okay, so the film is indeed lost. That makes one Chaplin and one Keaton
silent film missing. Eighteen Harold Lloyd glass character (and fifty
three Lonesome Lukes) missing. Now, how many of the silent Harry
Langdon films are missing? >> Stay informed about: 18 Harold Lloyd Glass Character Films Missing |

Keaton is in Arbuckle's "A Country Hero" which remains lost.

A COUNTRY HERO and A DESERT HERO are different films.
The first is lost. The second likely is too.

You're right. I wasn't thinking straight. A COUNTRY HERO is an Arbuckle
Keaton film released Dec.10, 1917. It's lost, that's for sure. While A
DESERT HERO released in 1919, is an Arbuckle film that used to be
listed as an Arbuckle Keaton film in many of the older filmographies
(and most of the stills that were credited to it were from OUT WEST),
wherein Keaton supposedly makes a guest appearance - something I hadn't
heard of until I read it here. Although in the book, Buster Keaton: Cut
to the Chase, Marion Meade says that A DESERT HERO "has been found and
without a doubt does not contain him in the cast." So, if you say the
film is lost, there is no way to know if Keaton appears in it, unless
we find stills from it showing Keaton is in the cast. >> Stay informed about: 18 Harold Lloyd Glass Character Films Missing |

Righto. "Filmography - Compiled by Jack Dragga"
So then, the film has been found, right? Jack Drugga said it. And he

Damfino. I'll ask Jack when I see him, in October.
But for the present, either way, it is doubtful Buster is in that one.

A reissue title called "Step Lively" exists, with a "Presented by" credit to
Michael R. Passard. Plot is pretty incomprehensible (Harold kicked out of
his rooming house, is chased by a dog, Snub drinks hair tonic, goes crazy,
big chase, dog captures crook Bud Jamison, Harold smooches Bebe), but
assuming that Annette knows of this film, what's the real title? Many of
the "survivors", like Over the Fence, are pretty fragmentary. And some 9.5
fragments have never, to my knowledge, been connected to a title. I have
seen one in which Harold is sitting in a hotel lobby with a
ferocious-looking cannibal. Rainbow Island? Who knows?

I don't have "Cut to the Chase" here but I read it just a few months
ago, and I don't remember Meade mentioning "A Desert Hero"; however, I
was so disappointed in the book that I started skimming bits and may
have missed it. I'm glad to hear someone else disliked the book. Her
"Bobbed Hair & Bathtub Gin" is much better, but still has its flaws.

Stacia,
I don't know of a single Keaton expert who respects the Meade bio, so we are
far from alone.
