best has been L'Enfant/The Child (which the idiots on the foreign
language Oscar committee didn't find room for; it was the 2005 Palme
d'Or winner

also Why We Fight, Breaking News, Neil Young - Heart of Gold, Battle of
Heaven, Duck Season, Death of Mr Lazerescu, Lady Vengeance, Clean and
Our Brand Is Crisis.

There hasn't been a studio wide release up to the level of these mostly
solid if not necessarily masterful films. Let's hope the rest of the
year improves..

Why disaster films are appealling - I was watching one the other night and it occurred to me that the reason disaster films are appealling isn't because we get to see some grand catastrophe, it's because they do something Hollywood can't do, they cull bad actors, if only symbolically. ..
