Archived from groups: rec>arts>movies>production>sound (more info?)

I'm sure we've had this topic on the group a dozen times, but now I need to
know how to do this. I guess I wasn't paying attention.

I have a shoot Friday and Saturday recording double system onto 2 Sony 24P
cameras and audio on a PD-6. I'd like to act as timecode master and feed
code to the 2 cameras. I'm planning on using 23.976fps on the PD-6 guessing
this is what the cameras will be recording. Is this correct? Wolf?

Please let me know.

Jay

The best way to feed time code is with the Ambient or Denecke tri-level sync
boxes. I am currently using the Ambient box on the feature I am working on.
It has performed flawlessly.

These cameras want tri-level sync when feeding time code to them or they may
drift a little. They will drift allot if power is turned off or a battery
changed. I had to work the first day of this feature without one and I
guarantee the camera to jump code when powered down. I PROMISES IT WILL.

With these boxes you can set and forget, however, they aren't cheep and
might be hard to get quickly. If you want to try without, I would run cables
and leave them plugged in.

Yes, 23.976fps

I would not cable feed time code to Both cameras unless all three (both
cameras and the PD6) were genlocked to the same Tri-level sync generator.
The clockit boxes or Denecke tri-level sync box will work when jammed from
the PD6. If you feed a continuous external Timecode to the Sony's which is
not in strict cadence with the Digital Video Sync, you will cause
intermittant glitches in the code or the picture of the HD tape when those
tapes are downconverted for Avid digitizing. You could Jam both cameras
from a GR-1 or from the PD-6, but then disconnect the cables. Remember to
Re-Jam every time camera re-loads or powers down.
There may be some drift, (small) but it will be better than incurring the
wrath of the editor for the Green Glitches in the downconversion.

Thanks everyone for the helpful advise. The shoot went well. We were in a
studio situation working off the cart and it was easy. We had an Evertz
master sync gen driving everything. The Sony 900s were given tri-level
sync, and my PD-6 got the standard sync. One camera acted as the master tc
clock feeding a T connector and then PD-6, camera two and Scriptboy took
code off the T connector.

Yesterday the first of the HD tapes were downrezed and the PD-6 discs chased
the video perfectly. We were using a Fostex DV-40 running version 1.71
software.

This was all interview and I'd never recorded 50 minute files with the PD-6
so I was apprehensive. It couldn't have been better.

Just curious, but did you make a backup of that disc ?

R ( who meets a lot of people who just deliver the DVD-Ram from the
PD6, just like a DAT )

No, the shoot ran so long and my wife had tickets for a show on broadway I
just blew out and left the cleanup for the rest of my crew (they are good
friends) Tomorrow the shoot continues and we'll do it all again. I'm
planning on backing up Monday's shoot but I don't feel it's terribly
important. I'll save that when I make a disc and someone looses it.

P.S. I guess my confidence comes from knowing that I also fed two tracks of
audio from the recorder to each of the Sony 900 cameras so there will never
be a chance of completely lost audio.

Nice. It's good to own the company, ain't it?
