Victor Fleming

Short Cuts
Gosford Park
The Player
and his last, A Prairie Home Companion

These aren't known as junk in my book.

"There's more taking place in the
background nooks and crannies of Altman's "Popeye" than there is up
front where the main actors are."

That is Altman's trademark. Wide shots to take in all the scene, not
just focus on what is taking place, which is how we would see the
scene as if we were there. And I do admit, I did like Popeye. Williams
also did an underrated job.

Grrr.

I love this movie, every bit of it, from the incredible sets to the
charming music to the perfect casting of Shelley Duvall as Olive Oyl to
even the unusually bearable for once Robin Williams as Popeye. What a
rich, bountiful treasure this movie is, in its wit and music and
atmosphere and costumes and casting and cinematography and its love of
its subject. (Did I not mention its plot? Well, few movies are
perfect. But this is a comic book story after all!)

Just look at all that's going on up there on the screen, especially if
you can view the widescreen version. There’s more taking place in the
background nooks and crannies of Altman’s "Popeye" than there is up
front where the main actors are, and all of it is a clever, inventive,
respectful homage, to a comic strip/cartoon character who has never
received his much deserved place of honor alongside Mickey, Bugs and
Daffy. I think Roger Ebert shortchanged Popeye with just 3.5 stars -- I
think the movie is brilliant without reservations. This film is a
jewel, and I truly believe that people who snort Coke all over their
keyboards when they hear it praised have rocks in their heads.

The Rock; it's a hard place.

Whah? Which of those great names would you pull for Victor Fleming?! I
hope you're not in the Dylan newsgroup because I trimmed you.

I don't usually join in on this sort of party-game go-round, but getting to
name 30 instead of the usual 10 proved too tempting (I could easily name
another 30 or more). Caveat: As with, I suspect, most people, for me a list
of the "30 greatest" actually means "the thirty I happen to
like/respect/enjoy the most myself". Which is why Hitchcock and Kubrick, for
example, won't make this list. This sort of thing can be a useful exercise
in that it forces you to dust out the old mental storeroom.

Having said that, most of these will be thumpingly obvious and many have
already have been named by others.

This list is subject to a certain amount of ongoing revision, depending on
who and what I've been watching lately.

On with the show (in no particular order)...

Carne
Cocteau
Bergman
Fellini
Tarkovsky
Kurosawa
Ozu
Mizoguchi
Sokurov
Renoir
Eisenstein
Ray
Chaplin
Keaton (not technically a director, but...)
Griffith
Rohmer
Tex Avery (hey, if Harkness can name Chuck Jones...)
Vigo
Murnau
Bunuel
Rivette
Hou Hsiao-Hsien
Brakhage
Ford
Hawks
Antonioni
Lang
Tati
Bela Tarr
Wajda

And a bunch of others jockeying for position just on the far side of 30.
