I set my fader to 12 O'clock and adjust gain accordingly to set my
level. From 12 to 3 o'clock on the fader seems to be a dead spot.
When I have to bump the level up a bit I have to go to 3 o'clock to get
a good level increase. From 12 o'clock to 10 o'clock the level decrease
is rather dramatic. Anyone else experince this with the 442? I would
think it would be a little smoother transition.

This has not been my experience at all. I feel like the 442 almost mixes
itself in comparison to other mixers I have used. I use my gain structure a
bit different from you as I like my faders to live at about 2pm...

i find pretty much the same thing as Charles. also setting the gain for
the fader to be around 2 o'clock means you can back off the level more
accurately before hitting the sudden jump between 12 and 10 o'clock. if
only the faders would behave like the sqn mixers - with unity at 2
o'clock and nice and consistent troughout its range. i wonder if its a
linear versus logarithmic thing on the pots.

Sounds like something's loose in your fader. I'd check in with Sound
Devices.

Get the pots fixed. I had the same problem, smooth mixing just wasn't
possible between 10 o'clock and 12 o'clock. My dealer replaced the pots
and the problems are gone.

So most of you are saying that once your gain is set that you find the
faders are very smooth across the range of movement. I always find
that i'm constantly tweaking the gain because of the lack of control
with the faders, and while mixing I have to make big moves with the
faders to increase level when things get quiet. EG: having to go from
unity to 3 o'clock just to get a 3-4db level increase.

Diego, what dealer did you go through, and how lond did it take? Is
there a big improvement in control? My experience with the Wendt X5
was that level control was extremely smooth throughout the whole range
of the fader and I found I rarely ever had to look at my levels. I
would hope that a fix to the 442 would yield the same results.

I'm in Holland. It took them a day, and my problems went away!

I only noticed problems when riding faders between 10 and 12 o'clock:
huge step up/down in level. Very problematic when recording music or
industrial ambiance... when you have to ride fader that is. Now
everything is smooth as silk.

At least in my case with a 4 yo 442, yes. Perhaps I set my levels a bit
differently. I use the trimmer and the PFL switch to set the level where
I want it to be (+8) on the 442 (peak setting) meter. Then I set the
channel fader to give me the same level.

I tend to record a bit hot with average levels running about -12dbfs or
+8 on the 442 meters.
With the limiters set at +16 over -20dbfs for digi anything it's almost
an auto mixing situation.

As an aside, a friend with a new 442 had to send it back for service
because the input levels would shift up and down by themselves.
