| Off-topic, but a friend of mine asked for as many 50s (or close to 50s)
films about Hollywood that I could think of. The usual suspects
include: singin in the rain, sunset boulevard, the big knife, a star is
born.
Any other ideas?

The Star (Bette Davis, 1952)
The Bad and the Beautiful
The Barefoot Contessa
The Perils of Pauline (Betty Hutton, 1947)
as well as the biopics like
Jolson Sings Again
The Eddie Cantor Story
The Buster Keaton Story
and many others.
Then there are the mystery/crime stories with characters who work in
Hollywood; _In a Lonely Place_ is the first that comes to mind.

Want to see a veeerry good 50's movie about the "real" Holly wood ?
-> "Sunset Boulevard". I've just seen it 2 days ago and it impressed me so
much
that this evening I will rewatch it with the commentary (DVD)
A really great movie. Perhaps not exactly what you are looking for but worth
to try

There are others outside that time-frame that are pretty good too.
Day Of The Locust - 1975, and The Last Tycoon the next year, 1976
