We recevied our first Sound Devices 744Ts today. The first delivery went to
a trombone player in the Nashville Symphony who has been first on the list
for over a year. It was a big day for him. There is no question this first
customer was extremely happy.

How do you get a trombone player off your front porch?

Pay for the pizza

[or hand over the 744T]

In my day we would just put alum in their mouthpiece.

maybe it's too early for much in the way of user feedback on the
recorder, but...

if wireless links to camera become more ubiquitous is the 744t
soemthing that could be practically used alone for mixing and
recording program audio.
for example, 2 lectro radios (with output at line level) plugged to
channels 3 & 4, stereo boom or mono and extra radio on channels 1 & 2.
all mixed down to a mono or stereo wireless output, with iso tracks to
on board cf card or hd?

i not just asking if this is technically possible (which i think it
is) but would/is it a practical option. for example, would it be easy
to adjust levels on the line input channels 3 & 4 (radios)? or would
it involve tweaking output of rx?

jusy wondering how big my bag needs to be.
big enough for a mixer or recorder, 2x rx, 2x tx?
big enough for mixer and recorder, 2x rx, 2x tx?

Yes.

Dunno on that one--what sort of level do the Lectros put out?

Yes. The 744 currently does not allow a mix to outputs

> and or, lectrosonic radios can't be used direct into channels 3&4.

Well, they can. Lectro's (at least all Euro models) do give line-level and
go straight into the 744. Although there is a limiter in this setup so
overload should not be a problem, there is no hands-on control over the
levels of 3 & 4 (other than via the setup menu)

Hmm. Yeah....depends. The 744 does combine very nicely with your own
prefered 4 output mixer (which you might own already), and that should give
plenty of flexibility. Suggestions could be SD's own 442, a Cooper with
4-output option or the SQN-4S series IV or IVe. All make nice teammates to a
744.
For the other options, i'll guess we'll just have to wait to see how long
we'll actually have to wait. I don't know what the bets seem to indicate in
the "Guess the real Release Date"-pool which is currently running here.

As Roland said, UHF Lectros do deliver line level at +5dBm to +10dBm
max depending on the model. The VHF 187 series are at -10dBm max. The
maximum rms output occurs when the transmitter is starting to compress
the input. Though spec'd into 10k (bridging) the output impedance is
less than 150 Ohms.

It's been released, shipped and I have one. Still messing around with it and
figuring everything out. Lot's of cool features and the final size, fit and
finish are outstanding. Probably won't take it on a job until I get another
job! :(
