Just finished a two day video shoot with a single mic on a stage. Perfect
situation for me to play with the 744t's new REC RUN AUTO timecode and roll
settings.

Setup. Rec Run Auto with record buffer set to 0 seconds as any buffer would
cause overlapping timecode issues.

Hardwired to the camera the auto mode worked flawlessly. Starting and
stopping with the camera with no user intervention and pretty high
confidence on my part save for one camera move during the day where
apparently the camera (Panasonic DVC PRO 50) was powered down improperly and
did not output TC from the BNC out until the camera was rebooted.

Using my Scriptlinc RF system, there were some issues that I think can be
addressed. As many of you with Scriptlincs or Scriptboys may notice, when a
video camera is parked in pause, the outputted timecode can at times jitter
between two or three frames. This jitter will currently cause the 744t to go
into record briefly causing an inordinate amount of tiny worthless files and
take numbers. I was thinking there should be some sort of adjustment so the
744t will not begin recording until it sees a certain number of (user
selectable) ascending frames. The machine could compensate for the late roll
by buffering for that same number of frames.

I should also add that any time the video camera performed a playback my
744t would record. With the Scriptlink receiver it was an easy task to just
power down the receiver, while hard wired I had to pull the TC cable from
the 744t or power down.

If you're not using a wireless link you could just plop a coax switch in the
line, velcro it to your bag or cart.

Charles, Thanks for the report.
One thing that worries me about the Ext-TC /AutoRecord mode on the 744t is
that some Video Cameras in Record-Run Mode back-up and do a little playback
to re-cue their tape for the assemble edit when they roll again. I don't
know for sure, but I would bet they may output a few frames of TC when they
do this causing the little files between the files. created every time they
stop.

Also if the cameraman just wants to a confidence check on the last take, we
have to make sure he tells us so we can dis-connect the TC. Otherwise we end
up with duplicate TC on 2 Takes. One that has the correct sound for the
take and one that has the sound of everyone standing around talking about
personal things while the cameraman stares in his viewfinder. Dangerous
thing when you turn over control of when the machine is recording. And it
is not easy to erase such a take without a computer.

All valid concerns but at least the damn thing rolls as a back up without
intervention which is by far the most important aspect of this scenario. If
the back up is needed and someone has to weed through a few replays with
duplicate code that's a small price to pay!

Agreed. If the sound on the 744t is Just a backup for the Sound on Tape then
the small problems with false starts and duplicate time code are far
outweighed by the convenience of the auto-roll feature.

all right, I'm stupid, you can switch off the TC receiver :P
(I had my read-it-twice feature switched off. sorry for the bandwidth
use!)
