Waverboy raised the question of what bits David Shepard added
or took out.
To date I have looked at only two of the twelve, _The Adventurer_
and _The Immigrant_. In those cases the bits added and subtracted
were not part of the film itself, but front and end matter.
David Shepard put the brief Blackhawk opening comments back in,
replaced the reconstructed "The End" on _Adventurer_ with one of
a different style, added acknowledgements, etc. The versions
of the films appear to be identical.
The Image looks a bit better on an NTSC TV than BFI converted by
APEX, but that's no surprise. Eventually I'll compare them on
the video projector, which makes BFI look spectacular.

Check out "The Rink". It's an effort not unlike the Essanay
restorations - two, perhaps three different source materials, one of
which is in rather poor condition. We have a lot more missing bits
now, and original titles (if I'm right about that). The scene with the
girl ordering the drink is there, and the scene where Chalie and John
Rand gets their orders together before bumping each other on the
dining floor is a lot more complete than I've ever seen it, though
there are still missing frames. Pretty nice, though.
"The Floorwalker" looks the same as ever, and we still don't have the
extended escalator sequence from "Unknown Chaplin". (Was that in the
final print, or no?)
"Behind the Screen" is the same as usual as well.
I wish there were alternative scores. I know it's almost impossible to
stretch out those old jazz scores, but I do miss them. I imagine there
are people who are alos wanting the Mike Mortilla scores. It wouldn't
be hard to put on two or three tracks of sound, but then I suppose
there are more royalties to be paid.

All of that is in the BFI version, so there's probably no difference
there either in the visual content. I thought the restoration did wonders
for that film, and the score is one of Davis's best. I was even happier
with that than with _One A.M._.

Ask Doug or Waverboy. :-) There's enough of the escalator for me.
