Roberta Semple Salter, 96; daughter of L.A. evangelist
By Elaine Woo, Times Staff Writer
February 4, 2007

Roberta Semple Salter, the daughter and one-time heir to the pulpit of
the flamboyant Los Angeles evangelist Aimee Semple McPherson, died of
natural causes Jan. 25 in New York City. She was 96.

Salter was one of two children of the charismatic and controversial
revivalist and faith healer who founded the International Church of
the Foursquare Gospel and built Angelus Temple, the white-domed
landmark in Echo Park.

The temple, with its 5,000-seat auditorium, was the site of boisterous
revival meetings led by McPherson in the 1920s and '30s. Salter grew
up watching her mother preach before mesmerized crowds on elaborate
stage sets, some of which in later years were designed by Charlie
Chaplin.

"Elaborate stage sets" and "Charlie Chaplin" mentioned in the same
sentence, and with design responsibility attached! Who'da thunk?

Interesting. I saw an episode of "Mysteries and Scandals" on McPherson
recently, which said that Fairbanks and Chaplin were regular attendees at her
meetings. I'd never heard this before and checked my CC library, but found no
references to her.

The only connection I'm aware of has to do with a meeting in Paris
that Charlie told Rollie about.

I wonder if this is the same story that appears in Barbara
Leaming's biography ORSON WELLES, which Welles says Chaplin told him.

By any chance, does Rollie's story include the phrase "I thumbed
it in?"

Not in those words.

Now that you mention it, I do recall seeing somewhere that they met in Europe.
Maybe in one of the Robinsons (Carlyle or David).

I looked up the Leaming story. That's...an interesting story.
But you have to wonder whether it's something Chaplin told to Welles,
or just something Welles told to Leaming.
Welles was known for tailoring his stories for his listeners, and
Chaplin was already dead.

Exactly. But if Rollie's story and Welles' story match, then it's
pretty likely true.

I've read a bio of Sister Aimee, LEAST OF ALL SAINTS, by Robert
Bahr, and I don't think Chaplin was mentioned in it at all. The Welles
story sure isn't!

It might be in "A Comedian Sees the World"--obviously not the version in the
Welles biography. I've seen a version somewhere in which he had a debate
about religion with her. I also recall something about him saying she was
an actress, and I did somewhere get the idea that they had done more than
debate religion, but I can't place any of it offhand. I've never read the
Welles bio.

I found a reference to the meeting in Marseilles in Huff (p.247) during which
Chaplin "twitted Aimee about her success as an evangelist , attributing it to
her magnetic personality and her showmanship. She was an actress, he said,
performing to people who frowned upon theatre. " They apparently toured around
Marseiiles a bit before she went on to the holy land and he went on to Paris to
meet May Reeves.

I just had a look at von Ulm and there's three pages on their meeting there.
Looks like this is where Huff got his info.

That's most of what I remember, so that's probably the main source. There's no
hint of intimacy there, though, so I must have picked that up somewhere else.

Probably so. Then the ultimate source of this would be Kono.

There may have been more of this account in the original draft of von Ulm's
book. She lost a chance to publish it with Morrow because it contained
material that a lawyer hired by Morrow considered potentially libelous,
since von Ulm had no paperwork permitting her to publish it.

The version of von Ulm's book that finally got into print was definitely
toned down, or so one would gather from the lawyer's report, which is
preserved in a collection of the Morrow editor's papers at the University
of Texas.
