Thanks for the update and feedback. I guess I'll have to do some

Its not too big a deal when a region free player can be had for around $50.
Mine is a free Coby that I got as part of a promotion from DirecTV.

In fact, when I researched the topic a couple of years ago, it turned
out that the cheapie DVD players were more likely to have multiregion
capability than the more expensive ones! My theory is that it saves
the mfrs money on low-end units; they can market the same unit in
multiple parts of the world instead of having to build slightly different
models.

Was yours region-free right of the box? Typically, one has to go into
some secret menus to set it that way. (There are also some units that
require hardware or ROM tweaks to become region free; clearly the
software-dependent ones are easier to set.)

Yeah, I think so too. My more expensive model needed to have a chip
replaced to make it regionfree whereas the Coby just needed a menu change.

Had to tweak the settings. But it was easy.
