Capitolfest 2008 (Rome, NY)

Although it is a long, long time off (Aug. 8-10, 2008), it's time for
us to start seriously thinking about next year's Capitolfest line-up.
(I tend to get the bulk of the Capitolfest organizational work done in
December.) So, once again we ask attendees or potential attendees
what they would like to see. We do a 16mm program at the Rome Elks
Club (2 features and 2 or 3 shorts) on Friday night, then a bunch of
features and shorts in 35mm at the Capitol on Saturday and Sunday. We
do have a theme next year which will restrict (but not in a BAD way)
what we can show--it's our 80th anniversary so we want to only show
features that actually played here. Shorts are a little more
complicated since we don't know for sure what WAS shown here--we've
compiled the listing from newspaper ads and sometimes the shorts are
mentioned and sometimes they're not. (Or sometimes it's just,
"Charley Chase Comedy" or something like that.) So for shorts we'll
just stick to things from the right period. (Though we showed things
like Harold Lloyd's CAPTAIN KIDD'S KIDS in a re-issue in 1929.) We
opened December 10, 1928 and we'll likely limit the period to about 6
or 7 years from that time.
So, as I say, if you've got requests, we'd much appreciate hearing
about them, either here or off-list. And if you know where a print of
your request can be obtained, please let us know that, too.
(Before the El Brendel fans descend on us, we ARE looking into
MR. LEMON OF ORANGE, but aren't hopeful. UCLA has only a nitrate
print and we haven't been able to locate another....)

Well, Art, if you're limiting it to what was played at the Captiol,
there's still plenty of great films that played there that fall under
what we like to see. The Capitol played both STATE STREET SADIE and
THE MIDNIGHT TAXI-- two interesting films that Zanuck wrote at WB
under his pen name "Gregory Rogers." They're also both early Myrna
Loy films. Unfortunately, I don't know if either survives.

I'd recommend THE LAST WARNING which played the Capitol in '29, which
is FANTASTIC. It's "out there" on the bootleg market, but only in a
crummy, 6th gen dupe off of someone's 16mm.

With the ads for these films as your guide, perhaps you could do a
show featuring the exact same shorts, etc?

Here's hoping I can find some shorts that ran at the Capitol for my
Follies!
