Yes, but they havent really made their minds up either, have they? If they
truly wanted an effect that shows Bishop II is a "real guy", then why not
use realistic effects, rather than such a crass floppy bit of gorey plastic
dangling from the side of his head?

They're covering up for bad makeup effects - thats my theory!

Alien 3 is nothing but baldy performed special effects. They had a lousy
effects team and had to minimize the number of f/x scenes due to this. Look at
the scene where a flashlight is lit in the ceiling where the alien is. The 3D
f/x there is abysmal at best, as is the scene where the water makes the eld
crack.

This was the result of Fincher telling the effects team that he wanted the ear
to be visibly wounded so that normal people would know for certain that he was
human.
