| Is there any place to purchase Chaplin DVDs in Letterbox or Widescreen
format so you see the whole picture? The few Chaplin DVDs I have purchased
or received as gifts are standard "Pan & Scan" format and so have the sides
cut off. Thanks.

With the exception of A COUNTESS FROM HONG KONG (1967), none of
Chaplin's films were photographed in any wide-screen process.

No comprendo. Wanting to see them without the sides chopped off is the same

Nor was COUNTESS.
However, it was presented in 1.85 ratio, whereas previous sound Chaplins
were probably in 1.37 >> Stay informed about: Chaplin DVDs in letterbox format |

COUNTESS was shot hard matte, so it >was< photographed in wide
screen. The VHS tape of COUNTESS is cropped on the sides.

Pretty much, yes, although you'd get an argument in a technical film

Thanks, Richard. So the old silent films were filmed with the same relative
dimensions as a standard television, and that what I am seeing on the screen
is the entire picture?

Interesting. I was watching a number of one-reelers the other day
(including The Immigrant) and thinking that they are surely chopping off a
lot of the action. But unfortunately it has been so long since I've seen
them "on the big screen" that I probably just do not remember. Thanks. >> Stay informed about: Chaplin DVDs in letterbox format |

I didn't say it was.

That's true.

COUNTESS was not shot using any
anamorphic or large format process. It
was made in the standard 35mm of the day,
The term "wide screen" was sometimes
used to distinguish between the old
1.37 ratio and the newer 1.85.
COUNTESS was actually shot using
less frame area than previous sound
Chaplins >> Stay informed about: Chaplin DVDs in letterbox format |

True.

I never said it wasn't standard for the time. But it >was< wide

No. Every conventional 35mm film
from the mid-50s on was cropped
either in the camera ("hard matte")
or in the projector to achieve a rectangular "wide screen" frame format.
This was the standard formatting and COUNTESS was no different than any
other regular 35mm film of the period. >> Stay informed about: Chaplin DVDs in letterbox format |

It sure wasn't Cinerama, though.
It's funny that even today people matte their Digital Video footage to
give it a wider "theatrical" look, when in reality you're working with
less area. The wide lenses are pretty expensive, though, so it is a
quick and easy way to do it.
