Has anyone ever noticed that in The Pawnshop, when Charlie goes to the cash
register to get money for the old actor's ring, he hocks a major lugie right
into the cash drawer?

Never noticed it before, but he certainly does. It must be an
aftereffect of those cascades of bread crumbs he spits out earlier.

Does he really? Shame on me, I've seen "The Pawn Shop" about twenty
times, literally, and I never noticed that!

In another scene, where he's begging the pawnbroker not to fire
him, he kisses the guy's hand, then discreetly spits on the floor.

I guess it's scenes like this that the reviewers were thinking of,
when they complained about what a vulgarian Chaplin was...

I've seen it more than that, and it took the DVD for me to notice it.

Impaling the turkey with his cane in The Count comes to mind...

The stomach rumblings while having tea in MT is one.
Cleaning out the kid's nose in The Kid is another.
Shall we start a list?

He also appears to do one right in John Rand's eye after feigning being hurt
and winning Edna's attentions.

DVDs can do that. Just think what we might see in restored 35mm.

That one's right up there. So many to choose from! How can I decide?

I think, oddly enough, some of his most vulgar stuff is in the sublime
_City Lights_, which begins with him being sodomized by a sword. In
retaliation, he sits on the nose of the offending statue, steps on its
crotch, and, with the help of a huge stone hand, invites the crowd to
kiss his bootie.

That's just for starters. Later, he wakes up in bed with the
Millionaire, exits right for a pee, returns, and pats the stupefied
Millionaire on the cheek as he snuggles back in bed. All completely
innocent, of course--like all those other hints of latent
homoeroticism.

He gets a job as a street cleaner, mainly shoveling manure.

The blind girl unwittingly unravels and removes his underwear.

He seems to be going for a pee later in the boxing arena when he
whispers a question and asks his buddy to remove his gloves, but he
gets a drink of water instead. Fooled us that time.

When the newsboy pulls a strip of his underwear through a hole in his
pants,
he decides to use it for a hanky.

Have I missed anything?

I love _City Lights_, but it's treacherous stuff.

Charlie has a passion for cleaning noses. He cleans Edna's in _Vagabond_,
and Chester Conklin's in _Modern Times_.
