Charlie's date of birth is given as 16th April 1889 in London. But I have
checked the birth records (I am a family historian) and can find no record.
Can any lister enlighten me?

Are you saying that EVERY birth in the 1880's was registered? Chaplin said in
his autobiography that he was born at home in Walworth. Would a home birth be
officially registered? My Dad was born in London in 1904 and he could never
find his birth records.

The David Robinson biography addresses this. I don't have my copy
at hand, but I think he says the birth was recorded a day or so later.
I think there's also a reproduction of some sort of ledger recording
the birth.

No birth record of Chaplin exists. You might want to look at David
Robinson's biography for a discussion of this frustrating
circumstance.

Chaplin's birth was announced in a paper called _The Magnet_ on 11 May
1889,
but it was placed incorrectly on the 15th rather than the 16th. His
birth was never officially registered, although his half brother
Sydney's was.

As Phil indicates, such failures to register births weren't unusual.

The relevant pages in Robinson are facing p.1, and p.10.

Thank you all for your help. I assume Charlie's parents moved around a lot,
being in the music hall. This might account for their failiure to register
the birth.
I have recorded both parents, living apart, in the 1901 census in South
London, Charlie and Sydney living with their mother.
Both addrresses were boarding houses.

Thanks again.
