Oh come on, Mike, give 'em a shot! Nothing ventured, nothing
gained. They might surprise you!

Although the number of celebrity guests is dwindling, there's another
set of guests for the banquet or shows that Cinecon could tap. I
loved the breakout session two years ago with Bob, Anthony Slide,
James Curtis, and Diana Sierra Caray (Baby Peggy). Listening to you
guys talk about your books was fascinating. There are plenty of
subject matter experts or authors or archivist that could do a short
Q&A after a film, or for a special session. Many of them are
attending Cinecon anyway.

A Q&A with archivists like Rob Stone or James Cozart would be
interesting. There's nobody better to talk about a musical than Miles
Kreuger. Or Richard Roberts for a slapstick comedy. (Yes, he did
introduce the Lloyd Hamilton short and do the Weiss-O-Rama
presentation, but I missed his regular comedy calvacade.) Bob
Mitchell was certainly a celebrity at the DOROTHY VERNON screening.

Has Cinecon considered honoring film archivists or restorers for their
body of work? I know that Kevin Brownlow was honored in 2001. Has
David Shepard been honored? Or honoring a particular author for an
outstanding non-fiction book on early cinema. Those are the kind of
celebrities I'd want to sit next to at the banquet.

This was my fourth Cinecon, and they've all been just wonderful. It's
pretty expensive to fly to LA and stay at a hotel for 4-5 nights. It's
definitely worth if when I can afford it, and when I can bribe my wife
into letting me go. Almost every film except for about three looked
gorgeous in pristine prints. And there were more silents than usual
this year.

My one request would be a few more shorts before the features. And
I'd love to see ANNIE LAURIE sometime too.

It was done at the Massillon Ohio Lillian and Dorothy Gish festival a
few years back when Mont Alto was there. Since I couldn't preview it,
I played a piano score cold (at least I knew what the theme song would
be). I liked it pretty well, but I made the mistake of not rotating
the piano from our orchestra position -- and I had a crick in my neck
that lasted for three days.

I was only able to attend Friday this year, but thoroughly enjoyed
myself. Living in Los Angeles, the guest issue isn't a big deal for me
since we have some many events year round but understand that it can
be a draw for out of towners. For instance, regarding Farley Granger
and his book tour, he was already in LA in late May promoting the book
and attending screenings, so might have been duplicative.

I'd love to see someone like MIles Krueger or Richard Barrios do a
presentation on musicals, especially the early ones as Barrios does in
his book. Robert Osborne? Other guest ideas (I imagine you've
considered but tossing out anyway): Betty Garrett (has she been a
guest?), Kathryn Grayson, Jane Powell (although I think she lives in
NY), Audrey Totter, Cyd Charrise, Eva Marie Saint. I see many of these
women around town at various other screenings so perhaps they're game.

Films: I too would very much enjoy seeing Ingram's "Garden of Allah".
Also, more William Haines -- "Slide Kelly Slide" or "Spring Fever"
perhaps. [although I think one of these is being shown on TCM this
year, newly scored]. How about one of the UCLA technicolor
restorations: "Vagabond King" "Under a Texas Moon" "Vienesse Nights"
or "Follow Thru".

First, thanks again to all the organizers, accompanists, volunteers, etc.
I really enjoyed Cinecon again this year.

As I don't have a great feel for which films are too common, and have
only attended for the last 3 years so that I don't know which have been
shown relatively recently, I thought I might give a somewhat longer list
in the hopes that one of them might catch someone else's fancy and also
satisfy your other conditions.

Bruce, come to Cinevent or Cinesation and you can have an experience
very much like you describe, particularly at Cinesation where the
archivists often introduce the films personally, recounting how they
came to find and restore them.

I've heard good and bad about LAUGHTER, a 1930 film with Frederic March and
Nancy Carroll.

I agree with the others who've asked for more shorts. It could be
that Cinecon runs relatively few shorts because it's just that many
more films to make arrangements for, and to keep track of. So why not
give Richard Roberts a 90-minute slot every year, and let him run his
own prints? Better yet, give Rusty Casselton a slot too!

In the last few years, Cinecon has run some pretty good silent star
vehicles. Norma Shearer's AFTER MIDNIGHT was okay, but Turner has a
great 35mm of UPSTAGE (1926), which is a far better film, directed by
Monta Bell in his prime. Reginald Denny's OH, DOCTOR! was all right,
but UCLA has his I'LL SHOW YOU THE TOWN (1925, much funnier) and
THAT'S MY DADDY (1928), one of the most charming silents I've ever
seen. Monty Banks' ADAM'S APPLE was just so-so, but why not run PLAY
SAFE (1927)? It was just run at Slapsticon, but for a relatively small
audience, most of whom won't be at Cinecon too.

As for talkies, how about SAILOR'S LUCK (1933), a wild Pre-Code
directed by Raoul Walsh for Fox? And speaking of Fox, UCLA has a
beautiful sepia-toned 35mm print of STORMY WEATHER (1943).

If it's easier to get Columbias than most other companies' films,
I'd recommend WHOM THE GODS DESTROY (1934), a little-known but
powerful film with a great cast of familiar faces. And since Cinecon
always needs a western anyway, how about Tim McCoy's best talkie, END
OF THE TRAIL (1932), a Columbia western shot on location in Wyoming?

THE PEACOCK FAN (1929), but only if you can get a tinted 35mm print
that restores the legendary talkie sequence in which Lucien Prival
takes a full reel to explain how and why the murder was committed.

We used to do preservation panels regularly, but they were phased out
in favor of archivists introducing specific films. But it's a concept
worth reconsidering.

Shepard was indeed honored some time back, as were Bob Gitt, Dick May,
Paul Killiam, et al.

Of course, you can't please everybody. We always have a number
of films introduced by interested parties like (this year) Miles
Kreuger, Hugh Munro Neely, Rusty Frank, and Richard Roberts, not to
mention Mike S., Stan T. and me--but every time we have a film intro
we also get complaints from some attendees that there is too much
talk. So this is one of those situations where we can't win either
way. We eaither have not enough or too many intros depending on the
druthers of those in the audience.

Robert Osborne?

Bob certainly knows about Cinecon and he has friends who attend,
but he's nearly always working Labor Day weekend--either at Telluride
or elsewhere.

Garrett, Grayson and Totter have all been honorees--Garrett and
Totter quite recently. Cyd Charisse and Tony Martin have been asked
in the past but it hasn't worked out.

We've run "Slide, Kelly, Slide," "Under a Texas Moon," and
"Follow Thru" in the past fifteen years.
