I just finished watching 'House of Games' with Joe Mantegna & Lindsay
Crouse. It reminded me how, in my youth, I loved to read books & see movies
about con-artists. It's a genre that I thought would proliferate after the
success of 'The Sting', probably my all-time favorite, but I've run across
very few since. Could anyone recommend something in that vein? I'd
appreciate it.

A few which come to mind are "The Flim-Flam Man" with George C. Scott,
"The Game" with Michael Douglas, and "The Grifters" with Anjelica Huston
and Annette Bening. All of these are very enjoyable movies, in my opinion.

Confidence, from April of this year, is a pretty strong movie.

NOBODY LIVES FOREVER (1946) is a Warners melodrama starring John
Garfield as a con man who falls in love with his target, Geraldine
Fitzgerald, much to the dismay of his backer, George Coulouris, in a
ridiculous but mesmerizing over-the-top performance.

Preston Sturges's THE LADY EVE (1942) stars Barbara Stanwyck and
Charles Coburn as a daughter-father team of cardsharps, who pick
herpetologist Henry Fonda as their pigeon on a cruise. Absolutely
hilarious.

W.C. Fields in MY LITTLE CHICKADEE as a con man who meets his match in
Mae West. He himself gets conned in THE BANK DICK ("Beer flowing over
your grandmother's paisley shawl"). He plays a medicine show huckster
in POPPY.

PAPER MOON (1973) - Ryan O'Neal and Tatum O'Neal as a con team.

THE TRUMAN SHOW - where Jim Carrey gets conned by a whole nation.

Bill Tung plays "Conman Tung" in Jackie Chan's hilarious farce,
MIRACLES (1989), a remake of Franki Capra's A POCKETFUL OF MIRACLES.

What would you call Zero Mostel in THE PRODUCERS (1968) but a con man?

The Spanish Prisoner (with Steve Martin) and
The Nine Queens

were particularly good.

No. SNEAKERS was garbage. The problem with SNEAKERS was that they
made up some of the security/electronic devices, and the way these
devices *would* work, to make the film work. I've been in the
security business for years. I've installed security and access
control systems (retina, fingerprint, and voice recog devices, etc)
for NASA, the entire Presidio Military base(including their 4star
General's house), United Defense (where they build tanks for our
military), and many other places.

SNEAKERS is a bad example because they didn't actually con anyone
with anything. They couldn't have circumvented the devices they did,
the way they did. Whenever they ran into a problem in the reality in
the script, the made something up to get around it.

When SNEAKERS came out, my best friend and I went to see it. He's in
the same business I'm in. ALL THROUGHOUT the movie, we laughed and
laughed at all the bullshit they pulled onscreen--things that
COULDN'T work in the real world.

CATCH ME IF YOU CAN. This is a great story--the real story--but, I
didn't like the film so much. Not for anything in particular, I just
didn't find myself engrossed in the "cons" of the film. That's what
I'm looking for in a con movie. I did adore Chris Walken's
performance, tho.

BTW, did I mention CONFIDENCE in my list? I liked that movie a whole
bunch.
