Its been some time since I've seen it and I can't remember .. in 'Under
Capricorn', does Charles actually fall in love with Hattie?

Or is it more the kind of situation where he just can't bear to see an
old friend in the state that she's in (i.e. alcoholic and miserable) ..
and believes that returning her to her rightful class will do the
trick?

I think I remember now that he does indeed fall in love with her ..
which is appropriate considering the film as a whole.

I see 'Under Capricorn' as a wonderfully passionate tale about how two
people stand firm and resolute in their love for each other.
Complicated class issues arise (.. obviously a heavy concern for
Hitchcock around this time as also seen in 'The Paradine Case') but the
two survive them .. blind to them in fact.

One question though .. I can't remember .. when Hattie shot her brother
Dermot dead, what happened? Was it a case that Sam took the blame? Or
was it Hattie who was blamed and the two banished .. to hush up the
scandal as much as possible (.. with the authorities in Australia not
even completely informed, etc.)?

Yes, Sam took the blame. The whole point is that Hattie followed him
to Sydney - an incredible thing in those days - and waited patiently,
living in degrading circumstances, for him to finish his sentence. In
all that time, it's implied, they didn't have marital relations. And
when Sam's sentence was served, they found it impossible to strike the
old spark. They have lived in the aptly-named 'Minyago Yugilla' ('Why
Weepest Thou?') for several years when the film begins, and are still
childless. There's 'a great gulf fixed' between them. It's another of
those 'powerful situations', Fergal, that Hitchcock liked to have
underpinning his films. Moreover, a quietly-desperate Sam invites
Adare to stay, certainly knowing the risks.

Don't you have a copy of the DVD, Fergal? I may have a spare copy
somewhere. Email me your address.

Well .. VHS. Yeah, I have a copy of the film. Sometimes, at work, I'll
half-remember a Hitchcock film and that's when I'll e-mail. Thanks for
the offer though.
