Yes, Sam took the blame. The whole point is that Hattie followed him
to Sydney - an incredible thing in those days - and waited patiently,
living in degrading circumstances, for him to finish his sentence. In
all that time, it's implied, they didn't have marital relations. And
when Sam's sentence was served, they found it impossible to strike the
old spark. They have lived in the aptly-named 'Minyago Yugilla' ('Why
Weepest Thou?') for several years when the film begins, and are still
childless. There's 'a great gulf fixed' between them. It's another of
those 'powerful situations', Fergal, that Hitchcock liked to have
underpinning his films. Moreover, a quietly-desperate Sam invites
Adare to stay, certainly knowing the risks.
