My wife bought a copy of the 8-disc collection for me for my birthday
(I was hinting for the 7 disc Image collection). Has someone who has
actually viewed both this (or the 12 disc version) and the Image
collection confirm that the image quality of the Delta collection is
inferior to the Image collection? I'm thinking of returning the Delta
set and finding a copy of the Image set if this is the case.

I saw this set in the store as well. I would buy it just because of the
Keystones. There is no Image set containing Chaplin's Keystone films. Only
a select few were released by Image. However, I can tell you without a
doubt that the Essanays and Mutuals will not look as good as they do on the
Image discs.

The Delta set has the same crummy versions that are available on
Madacy and Koch - almost unwatchable copies of the films that are
accompanied by really stupid soundtracks. However, it does have all of
the existing Keystone films, in chronological order. They are merely
unwatchable!

The Image set has all of the Essanay and Mutual films, in the current
best quality available on DVD.

All of this may be coming out in the next few months from the BFI in
newly restored versions. Certainly any restored Keystones will beat
the pants off the current shoddy offerings. It's possible that some of
the Essanay films will be somewhat improved, but it's doubtful if by
much. The Keystone films might have more footage in them from the BFI
as well.

Regardless, I would get rid of the Delta set. It is rotten.

There has been some discussion of the BFI releases of Chaplin shorts.

Unless plans have changed and they haven't told me, BFI will be releasing our
versions of the Essanay films, identical to those offered by Image except that
the master digital tapes have been converted to PAL and the set will be
packaged in two rather than three DVDs.

The BFI releases of the Mutuals will be basically the same as the Image
editions, converted to PAL, but with three important changes.

First, they will be releasing the films in two sets of six, the first set to be
released the end of November and the second set in the fall of 2004.

Second, Kevin Brownlow is restoring some missing snippets from materials held
by the BFI National Film Video and Television Archive.

Third, all of the films will have new scores composed and conducted by Carl
Davis.

Of course it is also our intention to release these versions in the USA and
Europe but this will depend upon Image and ARTE, who have exclusive rights for
some time ahead in the existing versions (from which the new versions derive),
and the matter has not yet been resolved. At the moment, only the UK release
is set.

The first BFI set will include EASY STREET, THE IMMIGRANT, THE ADVENTURER, THE
RINK, THE CURE, and BEHIND THE SCREEN.

The DVD release is tied to a concert presentation with Carl Davis conducting
the London Philharmonic at Royal Festival Hall at the end of November. Three of
the Mutuals will be used as curtain raisers to three CC features, THE KID, CITY
LIGHTS and THE CIRCUS.

Oh, and I forgot to add that in the second series, for better or worse we will
use the longer version of ONE A.M.

What could be "worse" about a longer ONE A.M.?

Is the first BFI Mutuals volume still on track for release in November???

There is a long, long restoration road ahead on the Keystones. It's a
cooperative project among the BFI, the Bologna archive, and Lobster Films
(Paris) with whom I work, and have shared our materials. At the end Lobster
will have the right to determine the commercial release, and of course it's
everyone's expectation that there will be one. Someday.

And, even if it takes a few years, if it's done right (and I'm sure it will
be), it will be well worth waiting for. With the restoration of the Mutuals
and the Keystones, my Chaplin collection will at last attain completion and
nigh perfection, except for THE BOND, which I hope pops up restored on one
of these upcoming compilations. I've never seen it, and am very much
wanting to. Now, if only HER FRIEND THE BANDIT would turn up one of these
centuries...

David, we the fans will be forever in the debt of you and your colleagues.
My most heartfelt thanks to all of you.

It makes the stair-climbing phase of the film too long, and isn't
particularly funny?

I think it's right to include it, since some people will surely
enjoy it more than I do. No doubt it would help to have it in a
better print than the one I saw.

It would be interesting to know who took it out, when, and why--
not necessarily for a good reason, of course.

It looks to me like the 8 disc set only contains a subset of the
Keystone films anyway.

I tried to find som information about these discs, and from Barnes &
