I asked this elsewhere, and would like to pick the collective RAMPS
brain on it:

I was recently asked for a demo reel when interviewing for production
sound mixer on a low-budget feature. I've only been doing sound
professionally for two years, but this is the first time a reel has
been requested. The producers were from out of town, and I was
referred by another producer that I'd worked with previously.

Is this a common request? And if so, how do you work around the fact
that on occasion you may not have access to the final product
(corporate productions, et al)?

Thanks from the new guy,
Christian

Asking for a reel is not particularly common, but there is no reason
not to have pictures or footage of your work, no matter what your
specialty is.

I have a stipulation in most deal memos I sign that I will get a
finished copy of the project. Producers don't always deliver, but if
you have 2-5 different scenes from things you have done edited
together and ready to burn onto a DVD, well, what can it hurt?

Seeing as how most of the post production of our tracks is completely out of
our control I think a resume is more appropriate. In all my years in this
business I have never provided a reel of any sort. For a low budget feature,
a reel comprised of corporate production sound isn't going to tell them much
and certainly letting them hear the last low budget feature you worked on
that had low/no budget for post production sound isn't going to help you
much.

I once told a producer I would try to dig up an old 8 track somewhere
in my garage. I could hear the double take over the phone and I
finally told him that he should just watch a few of the movies I'd
done and look at my resume. Haven't been asked for another one in at
least 10 years.

When I get ask for a reel, I always send them "Doug's Best Wildtracks." It
always a stunner!

The must be inexperienced producers.

A reel won't tell them what the production mixer was up against at the
location, or what post did to their tracks afterwards (good or bad).

Heck, even something as simple as a line out of sync could have dozens
of different causes... or actually be recorded with faulty code or the
wrong recorder setting, and then fixed in post so someone looking at
the reel would never know there was a problem...
