They'll make a boatload of money on this one. . . .

http://www.variety.com/article/VR1117969246.html?categoryid=13&cs=1

I was never a fan of that show but all the other kids -- and some
grownups, too -- were, and they talked about it a lot. I was out of the
loop, so to speak. But I've grown to like a good ORIGINAL vampire
story, such as INTERVIEW WITH A VAMPIRE, which somehow made something
old fresh again. I'm glad to see Depp onboard, because he's pretty
conscientious most of the time, and with his wont for oddness, it'll be
likable.

Can't help but recall how likable Depp's SLEEPY HOLLOW was... and how
unscary... Meanwhile, like GRINDHOUSE gave us faux trailers, will
DARK SHADOWS break for Ivory Snow commercials?... (Note, though, that
Dan Curtis did have a couple of good horror outings: BURNT OFFERINGS
and 'Trilogy of Terror'.)

And "House of Dark Shadows", of course.

Everyone seems to have the retro preoccupation *about* the series, or
the fact that *someone* did a vampire series, or that somebody did
something sorta cool and horror back in the 70's...
And most of them are usually in for a big fat shock when they actually
watch the old show and realize it really was just your basic "General
Hospital"-style daytime soap.
With daytime-soap plots, daytime-soap sets, daytime-soap camerawork, and
daytime soap opera ACTING. -_-

Nothing like any other soap opera? Nah... if Susan Lucci isn't one of
the undead, I don't know who is...

With the extra added bonus that the budget for the original series was
SO low, they could only afford to shoot everything once. Which was
pretty much the same as showing it live; any mistakes went on air anyway
because they couldn't do it again. Thus you have tons of blown lines
(especially by Frid, who apparently had something of a problem
remembering his lines), miscues, flubs, visible microphones, and scenes
where you can see the large steel industrial metal drum that the dry ice
vapor is coming out of not-so-carefully hidden behind the wall of the set...

Derek, it was about VAMPIRES. Yes, it had a soap-opera LOOK, in that it
was on video tape, and of course it had a perpetual story arc, but it
was about vampires. That was nothing like any other soap opera. Now, I
can't say I liked it, but I never followed it enough to get hooked. But
surely it was at least different than your typical soap opera.

You've got a point there. The woman hasn't aged in twenty years.
Meanwhile, the other cast members have. Poor things. And they don't
even know she's feeding on them.

Re ALL MY CHILDREN, at least a couple of middle-aged male actors have
conscious hair-dyes to look younger (in one case to de-emphasize the
age difference between the actor and his love interest, who plays
Lucci's daughter Kendall on the show).

How do you evaluate the short-lived 1991 nighttime version with Ben
Cross as Barnabas?

And especially a guy walled up in a basement shouting about how he was
dying all alone, as a stagehand walked across the set.

But with all that, there was something about it that hooked you.
Low-budget taping with bad actors is just one of many way to tell a
story, and it's the story that counts. A storyteller in the library
doesn't have special effects or retakes, yet a good story can hold your
attention. A Polaroid photo of a compelling subject is still a good work
of art.

In particular, Barnabbas Collins was a classic tragic hero, and
sometimes anti-hero, like Lawrence Talbot a man in a bad position
"Though no fault of his own," and you sort of rooted for him. The trick
will be to remake that story for the third or fourth time and make it
fresh. I guess that's up to Depp, and if anyone can pull it off he can.

A near-retirement Dan Curtis trying to revive old brandnames for income,
networks with similarly wishful views of the old series, and the dying
trend for 80's prime-time glitz soaps (see "Dynasty" thread) latching
onto some pre-Anne Rice stirrings.

(In fact, kind of had the 90's version in mind when I mentioned that
"Retro wishful-thinking" bit.)

What gets me is the time compression and expansion. It takes weeks for a wedding to happen. Even the
ceremony can take several show to finish. On the other hand, events like

Sort of like watching "Dune" (either version) if you've read the book.
Interesting visuals but you already know what's going to happen so you
don't care much.

But a milestone, it its way: AFAIK, the first time a TV series was ever
remade, in the same sense as a movie remake.
