Going to Amazon to check the availability of the novel "Cinderella Liberty,"
I noticed that the author Darryl Ponicsan wrote a novel last year titled
"Last Flag Flying." The new book reunites the characters of Ponicsan's novel
"The Last Detail" which was made into a memorable 1973 film starring Jack
Nicholson, Otis Young and a very young Randy Quaid.
Running a Google for reviews on "Last Flag Flying" I notice that a film
deal is already in the works. According to IMDB, Quaid is on board,
Nicholson is considering a reprise of his Oscar nominated role, and Morgan
Freeman may assume the late Otis Young's role.
For the uninitiated: "The Last Detail" is the story of three sailors.
Billy "Badass" Buddusky (Nicholson) and "Mule" Mulhall are veteran Shore
Patrol cops, given the unenviable task of escorting Seaman Larry Meadows
(Quaid) to a military prison. Meadows is just a kid, given a ridiculously
long sentence for a very minor misdeed. Taking pity on the youngster, the
older sailors take a deliberately circuitous route to the brig, with stops
along the way calculated to give Meadows some memories to sustain him in
prison. As Billy Badass put it, "No *#@!!* Navy's going to give some poor
**!!@* kid eight years in the #@!* brig without me taking him out for the
time of his *#@!!* life. "
As I understand it, the new story has the three men reuniting 35 years
later after Meadows' son is killed in action in Iraq..
