Anyone encountered this? I've read the manual and it does mention that
this may happen. As recommended in the manual, I tried shift+F1 to go
home and that didn't work. Internal or external power doesn't change
things. Powering off and back on doesn't fix it either.
Tell me if you have any ideas I haven't thought of.
On set and in a panic,

Stan G

What about trying the old "solve-the-glitch" standby of disconnecting all
power sources and connections possibly carrying voltage that may be on your
cart, REMOVING the battery and letting it sit for 30 seconds or a minute?

José at Zaxcom says hit F1 by itself, and make sure the battery is in good
shape, try ext power too.

Hit Shift and the 'INC' key. That raises the contract level of the screen.
It might have inadvertantly gotten turned down. Also, try calling Zaxcom
directly. As good as this group is they will answer your questions quicker
during working hours.

Try to reboot the Deva by powering off the Deva, hold down the "MORE" key on
the front of the unit, and turn the Deva on while you continue to depress
the "MORE" key for about 10 seconds. This will bring up a quick start menu,
ignore this and prett SHIFT + HOME. Remember that this will bring the Deva
back to the factory 48K, 30NDF, 2 track recording. Let me know if this
works.

With some lectro receivers connected to the mic-ins of the deva *and*
phantom power on you might encounter this phenomenon due to the fact that
the display and the phantom power are one the same circuit or so. the
re-boot and the contrast won´t help in this case. I solved this by
connecting the lectros to the line-in while in portabrace-mode...

frank's mention of the phantom power circuit and the display being
connected brings up my experience,
my local dealer performed a phantom power modification on my deva II
that was intended to improve the use of 4 phantom powered mics so all
got 48V phantom,
a couple days later my deva display went blank, and adjusting the
contrast i could only find one level where the display BARELY showed,
it would often fade to blank and was difficult to readjust to being
barely readable,
even with no phantom powering switched on the mic inputs the display
remained the same,
i ran the deva 'blind' for a full production day knowing the menus,
the deva recorded, played back, and mirrored fine,
that night we undid the modification and the display returned to normal,
this was only my experience, and i believe obviously directly related to
the modification so your situation MAY be different,
but it may be useful to perform all restarts as mentioned here, and free
up all your phantom power, as it seems to related to the display going
blank,
interested to hear what you find out,

I got in touch with Zaxcom and they helped solve the problem. Here's
what they suggested and it worked on my machine -

"Try holding down the more key on power up. This will reset the unit.

Disconnect any phantom powered microphones and be sure all phantom
power is
switched off. If this does not work there is a hardware problem."

Thanks for all your suggestions,

Stan G

Might be a dumb question, but why would you use the mic ins with Power instead
of using a mixer with solid pre's and line input to the recorder? This way,
your power is drawn from the mixer. If no mixer, buy a Denecke DCode box.

Because you may want to go over-the-shoulder without a mixer. The mic pres are
certainly up to the task. I did just that in Kamchatka 2 years ago on some
fairly rugged locations where every ounce you carried was another ounce you
carried....and it worked fine for me.
