Just saw it for $8.99. 5 DVDs, as I recall, containing about 14 hours of
Chaplin.

I don't plan on buying it but does anyone have it and is this okay or not
good at all?

Darren

I have the St. Clair set, which is on three discs, but is probably the
same thing (it also advertises over 14 hours).

The First Nationals are fair to good. The Keystones ranges from
unwatchable (BETWEEN SHOWERS, TANGO TANGLES, RECREATION) to not-bad
(GETTING ACQUAINTED, BARROOM FLOOR, HIS NEW PROFESSION, THE STAR
BOARDER).
Some have W.H. Production reissue titles.

Most of the Mutuals are the RKO/Van Beuren versions, and appear to have
been taken from the feature compilations, as they have "Chapter One,"
etc. with the page turning. They look OK.
The Essanays also look OK.

Overall- if you care about quality and have the $$, the David Shepard
versions are the way to go. If you just want to see tons of Chaplin
for $8 and don't care about the quality, this is better than nothing.
:)

To clarify something in my previous post- the Mutuals are the RKO/Van
Beuren versions, but don't have the original soundtracks. Most of the
shorts on the whole DVD collection have a piano accompaniment.

So those (like myself) who like the music scores on the RKO/Van Beuren
versions will still have to keep searching for them on DVD.
