Dicaprio to star in Roosevelt movie

Director Martin Scorsese and actor Leonardo DiCaprio are to team up for
a film about the life of former US President Theodore Roosevelt.

DiCaprio will star as the president in the adaptation of Edmund
Morris's Pulitzer Prize-winning book, The Rise of Theodore Roosevelt,
according to Variety magazine.

It will be the fourth time the pair have worked together.

They are currently in the midst of filming crime drama The Departed,
having also made Gangs of New York and The Aviator together, the latter
earning them both Oscar nominations.

The new film will chronicle the life of Roosevelt as he progressed from
a New York politician to commander of the Rough Riders, the First US
Volunteer Cavalry Regiment, and on to the White House in 1901.

Nicholas Meyer is writing the script.

"From the first page of the book his life reads like a movie that
requires a big bag of popcorn," Meyer said.

Roosevelt was the 26th US President, serving from 1901 to 1909.

And four Black Beauties, and a Dexatrim or two.

Of course, I'm probably out of touch. Kids these days are just *dying*
to hear more about Roosevelt, right?

Maybe that's why he will be played by a kid.

The rightwing one or the leftwing one? Lets see; One guy is erudite
and sophisticated, the other rotund, brash and outspoken. Yeah,
DiCaprio sure fits them both to a tee.

Uh, if he was Leo's age, he'd be out of college, overbearingly effusive,
and riding horses in the Spanish-American War.

Which, as you know from history...

This was period of time when America was
imperialistic particularly in the Carribean and
Pacific Islands. I wonder how much of the
movie will be a thinnly veiled metaphor for
current events.

Imperialism "lite" compared to everyone else, those days and especially
these days. If they go that route, they'll probably make the US out to
be as bad as Stalinist USSR.

None, because I'll bet this is going to be one of those Scorsese films
he doesn't make, like the Dean Martin picture or the one about Robert
Johnson.

Scorsese needs to complete his trilogy of films in which DiCaprio
suffers horrific physical mauling, but somehow his pretty face
survives, as in Gangs of New York and The Aviator; maybe a
remake of The Last Temptation of Christ.

Which one are you considering "left wing", the one who took on the
big corporations and grabbed a bunch of land for the "people?" Or
the one who presided over the largest military buildup in the
history of the country, that would be the "right wing" one, right?
And, for the record, Teddy was probably more erudite and sophisticated
than Franklin any day of the week.

Seriously, I was very surprised with DiCaprio's portrayal of
Howard Hughes. If I had not seen that movie I'd have some real
doubts about him playing TR, but the kid can act.

At least he bore more of a resemblance to Hughes than the Roosevelts.

You bring up an interesting point, Rich (without even realizing it, of
course): does an actor have to look like the subject of the biopic? I
can recall two examples: in "La Bamba" Lou Diamond Phillips didn't look
anything like the rather rotund Richie Valens, and in a recent TV movie
about Jerry Lewis and Dean Martin, neither Sean Hays nor Jeremy Northam
looked anything like the subjects, and yet Northam's take on Dean Martin
was *uncanny* in its portrayal. Sean Hays, of course, is just lame.
