For those of you who follow the Starz/Encore "The Directors" series, they've
finally gotten around to doing one on Big Dave. It's a ways off - won't
premiere 'til Sept 4th, but I got to view an advance copy this afternoon and
I really liked it. Lots of time spent discussing the ideas of film with
Lynch himself, and they cover each and every Lynch movie.

The TV work is pretty much glossed over, as the series is really about
films, so there isn't too much attention paid to TP, other than FWWM. Kyle
is interviewed and in general is very positive about his experiences of
working with Lynch - he does however poo-poo FWWM a bit saying he felt it
kind of "damaged the charm of the series". Lynch, in a roundabout way,
agrees, but doesn't apologize for the piece and in fact seems pleased that
over the years the film has come to be more and more appreciated. Then he
says "That and five dollars'll get ya' a cup a' coffee!"

There's a great bit when discussing LH in which he compares the story to
O.J. Simpson - shortly after this the documentary cuts to a scene from the
film with Robert Blake! After discussing the troubled production of "Dune",
Lynch whips out what was my favorite quote from the doc: "Don't make a film
if it can't be the film you wanna make. It's a joke - and a sick joke - and
it'll kill ya'." The show runs just under an hour and features interviews
with Dennis Hooper, MacLachlan, Sissy Spacek, Laura Dern and a few others.
Mark your calendars.
