I have a Yamaha Dolby Digital AV Amp, which has coaxial and optical digital
out. (Coaxial marked up as CD, optical marked as DVD)
My DVD player has coaxial Digital output only, so I have to plug in my DVD
player to the CD coaxial connection on the amp. All is fine and I get full
dolby digital on all 5.1 channels.

However I have a set of DVDs which are marked up Dolby Digital but are
Region 1 NTSC format, when the film/show starts, the amp shows Dolby Digital
but the speaker output is only L and R (not C, RL and RR). Is this something
to do with the DVD being Region 1? or is it my player? I have other Region 1
DVDs marked Dolby Digital and they play fine and output to all 5 speakers.

Any advice greatly appreciated!

Chris

What films are they? It's possible that they're plain DD Stereo, which
is why you're only getting two channels. You should be able to use Pro
Logic with it to give you some surround effects if your amp has it.

NTSC are just as capable of having 5.1 etc as are any other region.

Gary.

Its "Jeremiah" Season 1. (Sci-Fi) - 6 DVD set.
The box is marked up Dolby Digital with its logo, the DVD starts off the
normal loaders/trailers of which it is in 5.1 for a few secs at the start,
but then the menu and episodes are just switching to Dolby Digital (2
channel).

I suspect that the loaders and trailers are new material for the DVD
while the episodes are the original TV material which only ever had a
stereo sound track. They've probably not mixed a 5.1 sound track for the
episodes.

The few seconds of DD at the start of each episode is probaby more to
do with a delay in the amp switching from DD5.1 to DD2.0 than the first
part of each episode being in DD 5.1.

I like a well crafted tale as much as the next guy.. but I didnt think that
was.. I'm not especially a fan of TB.. Batman was great, Plant of the
Apes.. wasn't.

So I'd rather rate his films when I see them, rather than say I am a fan of
him inclusively.

PoA was cack, I'm no great fan of his Batman's either - but Edward is,
to me, a beautifully odd movie

I assume by "top post" you mean I reply at the top?
i suppose I like to read the reply immediately, and only keep the releveant
email in my reply, and remove the remaining history, this is as I dont see
why I should repost all the replies again and resend all the previous emails
round the servers again.

So you would prefer me to post replies at the bottom? or have I
misunderstood "Top post?"

According to various R1 retailers Jeremiah is only DD 2.0 so what you
are seeing is correct. As other have said use Pro Logic or PLII if the
amp has the facility.

aye well its useful to basically reply inline, snipping irrelevent parts
as its easy to see whay a person is talking about

The Top Post Police believe that it is OK to have piles of stuff quoted at
the top, so that you have to scroll down in order to read the new stuff,
although you have a threaded newsreader and can easily see the previous
posts if you want to.

At least, I often see knee-jerk responses attacking "top posting", whereas
the more annoying habit of over-quoting is less often noted.

Agreed.

Jonathan Swift would have loved this debate.
