After viewing the numerous "Wizard of Oz" silents included on the recent
restored release, I noticed that the same costume used to represent a donkey
(horse) was used in the other films... I think the lion costume was used
more than once too.

....aside...

The Cowardly Lion sure got "short shrift" in those early films (he didn't
even appear in the Semon film... and he didn't seem so cowardly either.

.... just an observation.

I've read most of the Oz books and, though it's been a while, I believe
that the Cowardly Lion gets far less attention there than the post 1939
incarnations of the stories would have us believe. I think it's the MGM
film that really popularized him. The books have quite a broad palette
of characters, and the Scarecrow and Tin Woodman get a lot more
attention than does the Lion. The Wicked Witch of the West isn't around
much, either.

Aside to Lookingglass: I tried to order THE ADVENTURES OF PRINCE ACHMED
-- the distributor is out of stock!
