This film is mostly about the trials and tribulations of an all girl
band. This band, the dreamettes, initial break into the business singing
back up for a middle aged letcherous R&B singer, played by Eddie Murphy.
The Eddie Murphy character is managed by Danny Glover.
The girls are managed by a car salesman/musical entrepreneur
, played by Jamie Foxx. It is Fox who gets the girls to sing back up for
Murphy. And who eventually steals Murphy away from Glover.
The initial lead singer of the girl band, played by Jennifer Hudson, has
to be coaxed every step of the way and is eventually seen as an obstacle
to the band's success. She is replaced by the Beyonce Knowles character
as the lead singer of the band. Effie (jennifer hudson) does not take
the demote well and sabotages some of the band's efforts. Eventually
everyone tires of her and toss her out of the band.
Jennifer Hudson's, brother in the film is the lyrical mastermind behind
the group's success and that of the lecherous older R&B singer.
After Effie gets shown the door by everyone including her brother, the
film focuses on the lives of the band with Effie's replacement with a
special emphasis on the Beyonce and Foxx characters.
The film also shows what happened to Effie with her stank attitude. And
how she goes from public assistance to triumph in the industry.
The lecherous r&B singer's career has essentially stalled and he has a
difficult time dealing with it.
The story seems to have Diana Ross and the Supremes, Berry Gordy and
Smokey Robinson overtones throughout.
The film was mostly entertaining but not the home run that the press (or
advertisers) make it out to be. It was okay. I would put in the same or
similar class as the film adaptation of Rent.
The pace was reasonable and the story was good. I rate this film as 2.5
out of 4.0 stars.
