So i just watched Dune twice, The miniseries once, and am currently reading the
book. I know Lynch has disowned the long version of Dune, and has 'admitted'
mistakes in making the film. Heres the thing- i love the movie, it seems to me
to be a fine adaptation, a great epic movie, and more original and skilfully
bizzare than nearly any other film of its sort. Why do people not like it?
What are lynch's regrets? What am i missing that marks this film as Lynch's
flawed work, and that has earned the resentment of so many fans?

I'm not sure-- I like it, too. From what I've read on the internet
and in print reviews, a lot of people who had read the book thought it
left out too much and misinterpreted a lot of important points. Some
people who hadn't read the book were lost, which I can understand. If
you don't already know the characters and the story, the film can seem
more like a series of vignettes than a complete linear story.

Still, I thought it was visually impressive and conveyed mood well.
IMO most of the acting was at least competent, although I'm aware not
everyone would agree with me on that point.

But then I like Wild at Heart, too, so what do I know?

Regards,
Milt

I think that Lynch did the best job anyone could have done cramming a
600 page book as densely written as Dune in to a 2.5 hour movie.

Yes, there were some bits where it was silly, but that can be said
about almost any film.

Overall, I believe it is the unauthorized (by DL) extended cut that he
disowned.
