Thanks

Just a guess from a newbie, but I'd say "ENG Mixer" is ad-speak for "easily
portable, small and easy to mount to a camera or tripod or clipped to a
belt, battery powered, output matched to camera audio inputs for single
system sound."

Just my two cents...
ENG is an acronym for "electronic news gathering" like EFP is for
"electronic field productions". For a fully explanation it is better waiting
for more experienced users.

Thanks Eric.

What does it all mean. . . the ENG that is?

Does it mean it does something special while gathering news . . . hahaha.
Will it come up with its own news?
Make the news more interesting?
Did we even go to Iraq?
Now I have a reason to doubt the whole thing.

But seriously though, is it made with news broadcasting in mind or something
like that?

The term (as used by most of us) refers to a compact, rugged,
battery-powered mixer with flexible metering and monitoring options.

So yes.

I believe the term first started being used by news journalists when video
cameras replaced film cameras and stories and their elements began to be
transmitted via microwave and satellite back to the stations.

No. An ENG mixer is one made to go in a bag, like the Cooper 104, SQN,
SD442/302, Shure FP series all the way down to somebody's $300 belt-clip model
that isn't even any good for a doorstop. They have rotary pots, run on internal
batteries [which, in my book eliminates the Shure M*67 line] and are used for
feeding audio to the generally miserable inputs of expensive professional video
camcorders. They are portable because its easier to chase people down alleys
that way. ENG mixers are differentiated from panel or studio mixers which have
slider P&G type faders, run often off mains or have the ability to go either
way, with more inputs, often more outputs, intercom, one or more aux busses,
insert points, direct outs, solos, matrices, etc and spend their days on a
soundcart or in a studio. Mixers like this include the Cooper 106 and 208, the
Sonosax SX series, Yamaha 01V, 02R and variants, Zaxcom Cameo, even the Mackie
1402 and Onyx series, among others.

fast news production done with electronic equipment like videocamera, dat or
other electronic device.

man on mic boom being mixer at same time feeding audio to videocamera that
shoots material to be broadcasted reasonable
soon. is probably most usual case. talking heads on location.
