I looked at Kino's Chaplin offerings but they don't seem to have all
the early Keystones. Are these early shorts available? For example:
Laughing Gas
Dough and Dynamite
His Trysting Place
His Prehistoric Past
His New Profession

Yes, they're all available from one venue or another.

Either DVD or Video is OK. More important is the quality of the image.

Don't expect much in terms of image quality from these Keystones no matter
where you get them from.
I've yet to see a first-rate print of any Chaplin Keystone.

That's right, unfortunately.
But the quality of Deltas DVDs is much worse than needed. Even their
documentary sound like it have been recorded on an old taperecorder,
and the tape bave been stored in a magnetic field as from a
loudspeaker, if you remember how those tapes sounded? >> Stay informed about: Chaplin's Early Keystones |

There are a couple of Keystones that have survived in pristine condition.
"Gentlemen of Nerve" was restored by the Library of Congress from a near
perfect paper print. It was aired on AMC's Comedy Festival several years
ago. The LoC has a paper print of "Dough and Dynamite", but I don't know if
they've done a 35mm restoration of it. "Mable's Married Life" can be seen
in a gorgeous print. It was an extra on Kino's VHS release of "Tillie's
Punctured Romance". And speaking of "Tillie", UCLA's soon-to-be-completed
restoration should be definitive, eclipsing even Kino's excellent version.

And add to that the pristine print of KID'S AUTO RACES from Lobster's
collection, available on DVD. I hope their current restoration work with BFI
and Bologna will turn out more along those lines...

But I believe this print is missing a few shots; our own Doug Sulpy has
reconstructed the film rather nicely. >> Stay informed about: Chaplin's Early Keystones |

As I recall, didn't Blackhawk release fairly decent 16mm prints of the Chaplin
Keystones? Couldn't someone simply transfer those to DVD? >> Stay informed about: Chaplin's Early Keystones |
