Hey,

I'm starting a long term job in a few weeks and am pricing hardisk
recorders. Ideally I'd like the Sound Devices 744T, but I'm getting
lowballed a little on kit rental and have to buy some other gear so I
can't afford it. I've been considering buying the Edirol R4 Pro. Was
wondering if anyone on the list has one or has used one. A google
search revealed relatively few product reviews. My concerns are the
construction and the quality of the pre-amps. If anyone could speak to
this issues it would be appreciated.

cheers

gabriel

Hi Gabriel...the preamps on the Edirol are noisier than the SD 744t.
If you are using a good mixer in front of the recorder than it won't
be as much of an issue, but certainly I'd be aware that they are
noisier preamps. I have a friend who uses the Edirol R4 to record
birds in the Yucatan Jungle and has found it to be very rugged.
