Does anybody agree that Ellen Burstyn's acting in The Exorcist was awful?
Really hammy and overdone.

I think she spoiled an otherwise great film.

She has not seemed so bad in other films that I have seen her in.

No, honestly. I've seen it loads of times and I think she is terrible.

Totally disagree. She is one of our greatest actresses.

That might be true, but it doesn't mean that she is good in every film she
makes.

But if your contention is that she is bad in 'Exorcist', then how are we to
value your judgement on what constitutes a good performance?

Her daughter is possessed by the devil. Do you want her to
*under*play?

I thought she was phenomenal. Every time she went upstairs to that
room, her dread, anticipation, concern for Regan and her physical
actions were not only different -- but built in intensity throughout
the film. Without her anchoring performance as the mother -- no matter
how good everybody else was -- the film wouldn't have been grounded in
reality and wouldn't have worked. That it DID work seems to be the
consensus after 30 years. Except for you.
