English B&W movie about a straying critic?

I'm looking for the title of a movie that tells the story of a drama
critic who plans to have an affair. One night he leaves a play after
the first act, setting out for a rendezvous. Unbeknownst to him, the
theater burns down after the intermission - a fact that does not go
unnoticed by his wife or editor.
