I have here a copy of a new disc on Silva Screen, "Charlie Chaplin: The
Essentail Film Music Collection." It's a 2-disc set in a very plain
cover; I guess it is supposed to be simple and elegant, but it is SO
simply designed that it looks almost like a CDR. But it consists of
Carl Davis conducting both Chaplin's scores and Davis.' I haven't heard
it yet, but it looks very promising.

Chaplin's music is, in some cases, hard to love. It is my feeling that
the score for "The Idle Class" is not particularly good and distracts
from the film, which is better than its music would suggest. But as
that title is controlled by his estate, I suspect that we will never
have a chance to see it with other music. But his scores are very good
when they are "on," I love the score to "Countess from Hong Kong" which
I have on LP.
