Post subject: UK / Euro spec. Panasonic DVD-S35 owners - Help please!
Archived from groups: uk>media>home-cinema, others (more info?)

Hi,
I'm based in Oz, but looking to buy a UK/Euro spec. Panasonic DVD player as
I'm after a unit with RGB via SCART capability to plug into my Thomson TV.
Aussie spec. DVD players follow the US / Asian trend of not having SCART
sockets fitted.

My question relates to the Euro version(s) of the DVD-S35. I've been
browsing the web and managed to get myself thoroughly confused as to what
features are or aren't available on this model.

Hopefully someone out there who owns one of these could clear up a few of
things for me:

1. Are there two models or just one? I've seen references made to DVD-S35
and DVD-S35EBS

2. Which of these features are supported on this machine:
- NTSC progressive scan
- MPEG digital noise reduction
- DVD Audio
- Depth enhancer

3. (The big one) Does this unit support the 4:3 letterbox zoom function?
The Aussie manual calls this function as "4:3 Aspect" and it's described as
"select how to show images made for 4:3 aspect screens on a 16:9 aspect
television".

Thanks in advance for any assistance.

By the way I think the 'EBS' bit is just the local spec.......

E = Europe B= UK S= Silver

If that helps

The S75 supports these, and is comparable to the Pioneer 656 image
wise IMHO

Not sure on those I'm afraid.

Gary.

Thanks all,
But I'm really most interested in the 4:3 letterbox stretch function. My
16:9 TV's zoom produces very ordinary results, esp. on NTSC letterboxed
DVDs.

I've had a good look at the online UK manual for the S35 (S75 manual doesn't
seem to be on the web site for some reason) and it makes no mention of that
feature.

I'd believe the manual, no questions asked, if it wasn't for the fact that
it also makes no mention of NTSC progressive scan, MPEG digital noise
reduction, depth enhancer, etc. Panasonic's spec. summary explicitly states
that some of these features aren't present on the S35. But then some of
these same features are explicitly mentioned in some UK web advertising for
this model (even sent one guy an email to check)!

So what do you believe? I really need someone who owns one of these things
who can tell me for sure what is/isn't available in terms of these features.

Cheers,
Brian.
