I'm a big fan of the movie "All about Eve",it's one of my top 15
favorite movies...but one thing I always wonder about is:Why at the end
of the movie, after Eve gives her acceptance speach does Karen Richards
say to Eve:"congradulations Eve"? Eve did a lot of ruthless things
during the movie, especially to Karen...Why would Karen be that gracious
in return?

Because what Eve did to get on top will soon be done to her by the next
in line. When it is over, the transitory nature of stardom might become
more clear than it was when you were willing to do anything to climb to
the top. Look out over the clouds now, enjoy the view, because you can't
stop up there forever.

What I can't figure out is why no one seems to point out that while
private accounts won't solve the 2042 problem, perhaps they will push it
back a ways, they certainly will help solve the 2017 problem, when the
general fund has to start paying back its loans from Social Security
while the general fund is still, presumably, in massive deficit.

One of the great things about the social forms of civility is that you
can be perfectly polite on the surface & still imply, subtextually, a
number of negatives: disapproval, disdain, even disgust. I think
Karen's comment contains just the merest hint of patronization.
