I think there was a time in Ireland when they used feathers as placemarkers
in their bibles. Much more effective when placed down ones throat. I think
in post Roman Ireland they didn't have TV or movies to distract their train
of thought and therefore they had time to optimize their daily life. That
ancient wisdom has been lost.
The Exorcist was probably trying to reflect current abbreviated practice.
Also, you forget modern hygiene is very recent. One's "finger" was probably
not something you wanted in your own throat until this century.
He was only fighting the devil - not bacteria.
