Post subject: FCP and Track Names
Archived from groups: rec>arts>movies>production>sound (more info?)

Hi all,

This is finally a follow up on the:
744 V203 track name not showing up on DATA (FCP5)

As I got quite many request on handling track names with any recorder,
I thought: hey that's easy to implement, since this is somehow already
handled internally with BWF2XML.
But I figured out that I can do it FCP CAN'T do it. With every single
clip or linked multi mono the track names will inherit from the name of
the first (topmost) track - whatever the XML will tell FCP.

But here is the UGGLY workaround I found and I would appreciate any
comment on that.

If the BWFs are a part of a sequence - other than of a bin or
standalone - the track names will interpreted correctly. So putting all
files of a folder of BWFs into a sequence (with same timebase settings
as the BWAVs) instead of a bin - this will keep the tracknames. Analog
to this procedure single files will be placed in a single sequence
which mach the settings.
Files can be dragged from there into the sequences the belong to. BUT
THEY CAN'T BE DRAGGED to the browser or linked with video and than
dragged to the browser (with latter case all tracks will get the name
of the video) - finally the sequences have to be used as some kind of
"Workaround Browsers".
I haven't tried to media manage such a project, but it maybe likely
that all tracks will be renamed to the "top" name.
On the other hand this could have some advantages in some cases. If you
consider the imported sequence as mixdown tape, editors don't have to
hazzle with all the tracks and just got a stereo track. But that
requires an "auto-expand" feature in Final Cut for the final cut (which
is obviously not there) or some third party "Finalize Final Cut" app.

Regards
Andreas
