Post subject: Famous roles taken by other actors
Archived from groups: rec>arts>movies>past-films (more info?)

I've been reading the reviews of Superman Returns, and I've been
impressed with the notices Brandon Routh has been getting. Obviously
he's going to face comparisons with Christopher Reeve.

Can anyone name actors or actresses who have done roles made famous by
other people (during approximately the same time of their lives) that
have surpassed their predecessors? Have they received any Oscar
nominations for them?

Thanks.

Are you on crack?

Ron Moody didn't win the Oscar. Cliff Robertson won that year for
Charly.

Ryder was nominated.

Howard Hughes was previously played by Jason Robards, who was also
nominated.

Hannibal Lecter was famous to those of us who loved Brian Cox in the
original Maneater. I'll grant it was a stretch.

Hercule Poirot was a guess. Was there a filmed Poirot before Orient
Express?

How about Rexx Harrison trying not to duplicate Noel Coward as Henry
Higgins?

Or Ron Moody getting an Oscar for Alec Guinness's role as Fagin.

I'm quite capable of making a typo without crack.

Sorry - he said "nomination", I thought "nomination", but I didn't
proof read my statement sufficiently to notice that I left out that
word.

I don't think Hopkins took a role that was famous for someone else.
I'm wondering who you are thinking of who "owned" the Hercule Poirot
or Howard Hughes roles. Was Ryder acclaimed for her performance?

I didn't remember that.

That was a small role of a very different stage of Hughes' life.

Tony Randall is the only name actor I remember playing Poirot before
Finney. I liked Finney better than Ustinov in the role, but Ustinov
came later.
