That would have to be the Cowboy Corral scene. so eerie.
Perfect dialogue. Lynch is so good at using 'quiet' to
convey a chilling mysterious feeling. Another quiet/scary
moment is the entrance of the homeless person, when
the film goes from quiet to a horrible rumble. The rumble is
more horrible, because it's preceded by a quiet section.
Another favorite scene for me is when Adam is holed up
in that nice hotel downtown. It's also quiet. The dialogue is
carefully spoken with an undercurrent of doom. The set design
is perfect. I've never seen anything like this scene in other
non-Lynch movies. So much quiet tension. Adam's secretary
tries to bring some warmth, in the form of yet another
come-on from her, but Adam's expression shows us the
effect is excruciating. We don't know why. We only know
the emotion is one of cold separation. On the surface we get
a lighthearted joke -'Get along little dogie', but Adam's (Diane's)
mindset is romantically burnt, having just walked in on his wife
and the pool guy.
The whole theatre of illusions scene was intense and scary
for me. And yes, I think Lynch placed that Laura Palmer
image there and might've used Sheryl Lee.
The first music you hear when the movie begins, says it all.
It's perfect. Scary. An undercurrent of foreboding, fear. -doug >> Stay informed about: Favorite Scenes? Mulholland Drive |

After MD, I do find Jitterbug music slightly disturbing now, in the same way
in which "singing in the rain" has a strange effect after watching "a
clockwork orange". >> Stay informed about: Favorite Scenes? Mulholland Drive |

The way it starts is quite average, but it does make me profoundly uneasy as
it goes.... For the very good reasons that
1. In most of David's films, sweet, positive or easy music is a sign of
impending danger or chaos...
Take for example Blue Velvet, the song in the movie of the same name... It
all seems so picture-perfect, so cute and innocent when the song plays at
first, when in fact nothing is what it seems over the cover of that
image......
2. The way it breaks off, calm normal at first, and then with the flashes of
Rita and Betty together, sends that same impending danger feel to it, or if
danger isn't the right word to apply, unease and discomfort is truly what
makes us so scared.

No. I mean the short piece of music that leads to the Jitterbug music.
It sets the tone for the whole movie. It's like a synthesized cello.
A low groaning sound. Then it goes into the jitterbug piece, but even
the jitterbug music is tainted, unlike actual jitterbug music.
It's jumbled like the images, with repeating themes that overlap
in a disturbing way. -doug >> Stay informed about: Favorite Scenes? Mulholland Drive |

Indeed - it is freakin' brilliant. Like listening to some of Charles
Ives' music where he overlaps and twists familiar American folk tunes
and hymns until you are moved in a completely unique way that is at once
connected to the familiar AND pulled away from it to some unknown place.
It creates quite a feeling of instability and anxiety.......
Hell, I predict that Lynch will one day be viewed as a great American
artist on the same plane as the likes of Whitman, Ives, Poe, etc..

You said it, mate! Music means so much in a movie. Have you ever tried
listening to a song over and over again, only to find that it can be
practically redefined for you if it's used in a film at a particular moment /
scene? It needn't even be a serious film. The use of Bee Gees' "Staying alive"
in "Airplane!" has tainted my perception of the song for the rest of my life.
Rather coincidentally, my three favourite movies of all time is Clockwork
Orange, MD and LH.

Try listening to "Stuck In The Middle With You" and NOT picture Mr. Blonde
slicing off the cops ear.
