I'm in the market for a Field Mixer. Preferably four channels or more. If I
can run it from battery that would be really good to.
I know it's easy to get something that does all these things but my problem
is the budget.
Can I get something like that for well under a thousand USD?
If not can I get a two channel that runs of batteries for under or about 500
USD?
I'm sure I can do just fine with two channels for a while.

Thanks

Sort of, if you don't mind cheesy, flimsy junk.

How about a Sound Devices 302? Three channels plus a couple more on the side that can be fed in but not actively mixed (you pretty much set & forget their levels.)

Street price is ~$1050

The Sound Devices Mix Pre is about $800, if I recall. The 302 is ~$1300. I don't
know of anything that will run on batteries for less that is a decent product.
But I've been wrong before...

Can I choose if I want battery power or external power on both of those?
I like the external. The battery option was just something that would be
nice too, you know, just in case.

Thanks.

Also while we're on the subject are there any cheap, real cheap, recording
devices I could use so the audio won't always go on the video tape.
What's usually used?
I would like to be able to import the audio into ProTools for editing.
Some cheap DAT's (or, a device that allows me to record directly to a hard
drive) I can hook up either one of the mixers you told me about.

Thanks

Creative Nomad Jukebox 3 (now discontinued.)

Some of the newer Archos Gmini I think.

Plenty of discussion on these in the archives.

Rolls makes 3 in 9V mixers for less than $ 100.00. You get more than you pay
for... they are not horrible with a hot mike... really...
if you have a low gain mike they have a built in waterfall... all than for $ 90

then Ambient in Germany has a small mixe for DV type work --- never used it...

- what a bargain

Kurt,
What do you think of the Marantz CDR300 or the Marantz PMD 670?

Would that be worth taking a look at?

Thanks

Quite possibly, but I don't have any direct experience with them.

How much can you afford for a recorder?
