"My father remembers a movie made sometime between 1929 and 1935, involving
a wealthy family who own a department store, a couple who spend a night in
the store, an ensuing scandal, and the suicide of the young man involved.
He is pretty sure that the scandal involved the pregnancy of the young
woman. The film was much criticized because suicide was presented as the
solution to a problem. My own guess is that such a storyline would mean
that the film had to be pre-Code.
Hope somebody can help identify this."
Can someone come up with a title here? It sort of suggests FIVE AND TEN to
me, but I don't think anybody committs suicide in that one:

Sounds like SWEEPINGS, a 1933 MGM meller with Lionel Barrymore as the patriarch.

Yes, that sounds likely. (I don't think there's a suicide in EMPLOYEE'S
ENTRANCE, is there?)
