Hi James... Classic Images is successor to the former Classic Film
Collector. When the video revolution took off -- around 1980 -- the title
of the magazine was changed, to include videos as well as film.
CI prints a lot of nostalgia pieces, always illustrated with great studio
stills. Usually they include a filmography for the former star being
highlighted. The prose is neither witty nor inspired, but if you're just
looking for information, CI delivers.
Films of the Golden Age is a magazine that was spun off from CI a few years
ago. This is more of a collector's item than CI. The cover is always
slick, with excellent color art, and it is in standard magazine size, unlike
the newspaper-like dimensions of Class Images. I believe I have every copy
of FGA they've printed.
Like CI, Films of the Golden Age prints puff pieces about certain stars
(even starlets!), and usually includes a filmography. Again, the photos are
excellent.
One would wish for a Classic Images or a Films of the Golden Age that would
print colorful, insightful, even controversial material about the stars. It
would make the publications a lot juicier. But for that to happen, they
would have to start paying the authors for their articles -- and that's not
at the top of CI's or FGA's "to-do" list. Pity.
