Holy Cow, did Mirren *and* Alex Jennings (virtually unrecognizable;
deserves a Supporting Actor nod) put on a show.

The film is almost (almost) a homage to Blair. One of Elizabeth's last
lines undercuts him, his place in history, and all the sympathy his
diplomacy labored to engender for the royal family. It left me
doubting that Blair and Elizabeth were the real subjects of the film at
all, or if the homage was to complacency. Mirren took the term
Negative Capability and ran with it, and for a brief time created the
illusion that the lights were on AND someone was at home (or at the
palace). Considering the foul personage she had to recreate, this
seems little short of a miracle.

The same with Jennings, who came off as an exemplary sociopath.

Right. A must-see from an unlikely milieu. There may be complaints
from those who demanded a documentary, but otherwise I can't see why
this movie wouldn't delight anyone who speaks the Queen's English...

I think the reason why it's so good is because the lead character is an
amalgam of the absent Diana and the English national spirit, which (the
proof is in the numbers) she exemplified. I don't know about you, but
I was as riveted by the (real-life) Diana, in the interview included in
the film (which Elizabeth watches in bed) as by Helen Mirren.

Stunning, brilliant film, but I think it could have been called Diana
as easily as The Queen...or perhaps "The Queen" was chosen because it's
intentionally ambiguous?

Good one, but I doubt it (though not firmly) ...mainly because the
title's about the Queen (QE2) and the queen (the crown), and one
double-entendre usually suffices.

I think several performances have Oscar potential.
The overall story is bit melodramatic to me- that is
except for the two main roles, everyone else is either
totally "good" or "bad" and that is too simple for me.

I saw it the opening weekend and it attracted a large
"blue hair" crowd. Thats somewhat unusal because
the elderly dont care for the noise and energy of the
teens that often plague the theaters.

As an elderly person of 50, I was shocked to find myself the youngest
elderly person in a semi-crowded theater. Hain't kiddin', you young
whippersnapper. Afterward, as the audience filed out, I thought, "Hmm,
am I imagining things or are all those bluehairs wearing red hats?" (I
mean big, fancy, Church/Sunday hats.) Then I saw one with not only a
fancy red hat but a big purple cabbage rose on it; and then I saw all
the Red Hat Society Ladies filing into a retirement home bus.

"The Queen" CLEARLY has meaning for the elderly, who shared Elizabeth's
coming-of-age during the War to End All Wars.

Iirc, my matinee audience had a pretty good cross-section (sans kids).
It'd be a shame if this movie got some kind of nostalgia quarantine.
(E.g., apart from the occasional headline diversion, I never personally
invested two farthings in Elizabeth or Diana...)

The Queen - The Queen is a film that focuses on the reaction of the royals and the prime minster (and his staff) react to the tragic death of Diana Spencer. This film focuses on the royals desire to mourn privately (even though they couldn't stand Diana) versus..

When Will "The Queen" Be in Wide Release? - ? Haven't seen a movie since The Illusionist.

Finally saw Beerfest: not bad - I never saw Super Troopers, but caught Club Dread, and thought it had some very funny parts (the real life pacman course for example). I'd been meaning to give Beerfest a try despite the generally poor reviews and boxoffice. I finally got around to it....

finally an interesting subject for a bio-pic - There's a new Bettie Page bio-pic coming out. I hope they get it at least half correct and don't portray her as a victim.

Finally, some good films - Fall season begins with : Hollywoodland about George Reeves career and mysterious death, and Superman, cult of celebrity, etc... The Last Kiss : has Zach Braff (Garden State) and written by Paul Haggis (Million Dollar Baby, Crash), seems promising..
