Flags of Our Fathers - spoilers

In the scene where they go into a cave and see Americans who had
killed themselves with grenades - why had they killed themselves?

I thought most of the film jumped around in time too much. They
should have made it more straightforward, like the last 20 minutes. I
sometimes felt unclear about exactly which guys were at each flag
mounting.

Overall it is certainly worth renting for $4.

It was the Japanese who had killed themselves with grenades, rather
than surrender to the Americans.

I found it somewhat confusing, as well.
