I've looked at various sites for a box that will allow me to watch on
TV and have a USB link to record onto my PC or Laptop. Hauppage seems
to be the nearest for easy PC recording but I can't see if any model
has a SCART lead too. has anyone found a way of doing this with one
box?

The Hauppauge DEC2000-t or the just released DEC3000-t do exactly what you want.

I think the 3000 is only for satellite, ie not Freeview
There is another box Netgem i player
Also beware: I believe the 2000 and Netgem have only a USB1.1
interface not 2.0 The data rate of 1.1 is not sufficient to transfer
good quality video on the fly
The transfer will involve heavy compression which will result in poor
picture quality
wait for USB 2.0 devices which will be here soon, if not now
Also I have read negative comments on the software associated with
Hauppage TV cards, but I do not own one myself, so can't comment

Slightly o/t, the other point I'd like to make is: be careful with TV
cards and TFT monitors; TFTs tend to have a fixed resolution eg: 1024
x 768 (15") or 1280 x 1024 (17")
TV cards don't seem to support these resolutions very successfully, so
you might find yourself watching in a smaller window on your monitor,
or using a built-in up-convertor, which, depending on the monitor,
might produce poor quality video.
Of course, if you are going to play back via a TV exclusively, eg via
TV out on a video card, this may not be a problem

Thanks for the tips. I finally went for the DEC2000t. USB1 is ok on
this card as it sends the bitstream as broadcast and this is rarely
above 4M/s. The pic quality is excellent and plays back on any pc
media player or back through the DEC onto the TV. The software is a
little flaky but it does the job. WinDVD is included in the pack but I
find this a little cumbersome for playing back files. My main interest
is to burn to SVCD or DVD after transfering to my PC over LAN.
My only problem, so far is installing the latest software from the
Hauppage site. I downloaded a 10M .exe file which self extracts to a
folder and subfolders with a total size of 0bytes ??? I have to spend
some time on that :)

Thanks again

There is much newer software on the German site at www.hauppage.de, also if
you load the German v1.05 firmware it allows the video to be played back
over the USB into the DEC and out of the scart socket. You also need to
install the 2.16 beta 2 software to get this function. This software is not
bad, although I have found pixellation problems on scart playback but PC
recording is fine.

I am also about to release a patched version of the .exe file to remove the
4GB file limit, this has always been something of pain, it used to be 2GB.
You need to be running NFFS of course.

It's hauppauge
Try www.hauppauge.de
(If this is anything like the PCI offering, it's probably made by
Technotrend. You could look at www.technotrend.de, they may have
something newer.)

This had me confused for a while: you are short of a "u" - goes after
the a and before the g, but why Amazon grabs it, I don't know. Most
misspells usually take you to a seriously dodgy porn site!

thanks for that. I eventually found it by going to hauppauge.com and
choosing the german flag. the new software is superb, much more stable
than the install disc and it even has a timer fuction. i'm still
playing around with it but so far so good. i haven't had the nerve to
install the v1.05 firmware as there is a warning that this should only
be installed within Germany, once i've got this thing pegged i'll go
another step.

I deliberately said the 3000-t which is new & is for DVB-T I assume that it is
based on the 3000-s which is for satellite.
